So, we were proposed to work in the cellar of the house, where pieces of a furnace and a place for cooking fish were found. Our work for today was to work with the sand which was stored in the main room of the cellar. So we started to dig the sand to load the buckets and to get it to the carts. Some of us worked with the spades and with special instruments to breake the harder pieces of sand. We were very active at digging and carrying the buckets to the carts. And some of us worked very productively at storing the sand in the large container. I had an idea that the work which we were doing was very important for everyone of us, because each of us tried to take some part in it. And I hope that we will not loose this feeling of togetherness for the rest of the days of our work.
After our work we had a meeting with Günter Boll, who told us the story about the beginning of the creation of the jewish community and how the work an the contruction of the 'Blue House' started. He also opened a discussion on jewish communities in different countries.
So, on the whole I liked the beginning of our working week.

Nachdem wir unsere Arbeit gegen halb Neun beendet hatten und wir uns eine lange Pause von ca. drei Stunden gönnten, stand nun der 'Polnische Abend' unserer beiden Polinnen, Ania und Aska, auf dem Programm. Sie kochten ein fabelhaftes Menü für uns. Die Hauptspeise waren gekochte Kartoffeln und Kotlet Schabowy. Als Nachspeise wurde uns ein toller Obstsalat serviert. Nachdem wir alles aufgegessen hatten (weil es so gut war), machten Ania und Aska noch ein Quiz für uns, damit wir Polen, ihr Heimatland, besser kennenlernten. Sie stellten zwei Teams Fragen, die entweder mündlich oder schriftlich beantwortet werden mussten. Das war ein Spaß! Natürlich sangen wir auch polnische Volkslieder zusammen. 'The end of the day' bescherte uns Valery mit dem russischen Lied 'Kalinka'.
We got up as usual at 8 a.m., had some breakfast and we started working at 10 o'clock. We were digging in the cellar and taking the ground out of it by means of special carts. Michal got sick with tonsilitis and had to stay in bed for all the day. After the work and and a warm shower we left the Gemeindehaus. We were invited by Gerhard to go to Freiburg and to take part in the meeting with german volunteers who worked in France. We were sitting in the "Omas's Küche" restaurant. We were eating the specialities of this region. It was "Käsespätzle".

After this tasty meal we were full of energy and we started to share our experience from summer camps and voluntary service. We got to know about different projects in France. Some of them were working with ill children, others with the homeless people and with farmers. We spend a really nice evening with those people and then we came back to Breisach.

1. Tag in Mackenheim
Der Morgen begann um 8 Uhr, als Florian uns weckte. An diesem Tag fuhren wir wieder nach Mackenheim, wo wir auf dem Friedhof das Dach decken sollten. Alle, außer Sweta und Walery, die sich verspäteten, weil sie sehr lange Swetas Reisepaß suchten. Sie waren gezwungen, mit dem Bus nach Neuf-Brisach zu fahren, wo Florian sie zufällig fand.

Den ganzen Tag arbeiteten wir tüchtig und fleißig bis zum Abend, und das Dach wurde fertig. Aška verbrachte den ganzen Tag auf dem Dach (wie Karlsson vom Dach). Peter war auch auf dem Dach. Die Anderen reichten die Dachziegel rauf. Christiane war auch dabei. Also, wir konnten an diesem Tag gelobt werden! |

Our second part of the group stayed in Strasbourg over the night. They went to look at the main cathedral of the city and saw a concert theer with the lighted pictures on the central facade of the cathedral. They also went around to see the town and saw very veautiful night sights. They went around almost all the town.
Im Blauen Haus arbeiteten wir zum ersten Mal mit Ralf [Hojenski] zusammen. Nben der Arbeit im Keller gab er uns auch einiges im Haus zu streichen und wir begannen, das Loch für die Sickergrube zu graben. Ein Ereignis war noch der Transport der schweren Betonteile für diese Grube von der Straße in den Garten.
Auch in der folgenden Freizeit gab es ziemliche Aufregung, als Ania nach einem Unfall mit einem geworfenen Schuh mit schmerzender Nase ins Krankenhaus gebracht werden musste. Glücklicherweise erholte sie sich dann aber rechtzeitig zum deutsch-bayerischen Abend wieder, zu dem uns auch Christiane und ihre Tochter Olivia besuchten. Nach einer bayerischen Brotzeit, begleitet von original bayerischer Musik, ging es mit Fingerhakeln, bairischem Sprachtest, Zungenbrechern und 'Hänschen Klein' weiter bis der Tag mit unserem üblichen 'End of the day' endete.
At 10 am we started with our work. This day we were divided into two groups, so not all were working in the cellar. Andrej and Sasha started to paint the outdoor stairs. Andy, Anja and Aska were digging the hole, which will be used as a water tank. My aim was to paint the stairs of the back side. It wasn't as easy as I expected and my hand got grey from the colour, which I was using.
| Then we had some time to shower, to rest or prepare meal. And at aproximately 7 pm we all went to France to Markus house. He invited us to the barbeque, which took place in his garden. He had plenty of food and drinks. After the sunset we decided to go inside. We had fun: Most of us were dancing, Gleb looked like a real dancer. The girls from Poland had so much energy that they could hardly stop dancing.

In the evening we had a 'Russian evening'. Me (and Valeriy, Andrej) cooked potatoes with chicken legs and different salads. We also bought some red fish and Vodka (Schnaps), that is very typical for each Russian table. Since we had no culatural program I deceded to sing three Irish songs to make some sort of a concert. There were lots of guests at our party including Markus and Christiane Walesch-Schneller. And in the end, Valeriy decided to tell a few words aboaut his native town Minsk. After that in the big hall we created a local disco-party with a few dances. On the whole I should sy the Russian evening was fine and welcomed by the majority of our guests.
During the whole time all our thoughts were with the Blue House where most of the work was done and lots of things were found. I think, each of us had an idea that by helping the 'Förderverein' organization here in Breisach we do really useful things.
Um 15 Uhr fuhren wir endlich nach Basel. Unterwegs aber hatten wir einen schönen lunch bei Gerhard. Pflaumen- und Apfelkuchen schmeckten sehr gut. An der Grenze mußten wir ca. 1 Stunde warten, weil unsere russischen Freunde die Visa brauchten.
In Basel besuchten wir eine Synagoge und nahmen an der Schabbat Zeremonie teil. Manche fanden das sehr interessant und sagten: „Das ist eine große Erfahrung für uns“. Die anderen fanden das weniger interessant. Um 20 Uhr nach der Zeremonie beschlossen wir, einen kleine Spaziergang durch Basel zu machen. Wir sagen das Münster, den Rhein, viele alte Gebäude. Unser Führer Gerhard erzählte uns einige interessante Tatsachen über die Stadt.
Dann fuhren wir zu Gerhard zurück, wo seine Frau ein Abendessen für uns vorbereite hatte. Bald mußten wir uns von Walery und Andrej verabschieden, weil ihr Zug um 5.30 Uhr aus Karlsruhe abfahren wird.
Na, unsere Gruppe wurde um zwei Personen weniger. Um 00:00 Uhr kamen wir endlich Nach Breisach. Obwohl alle müde waren, saßen wir zusammen, tranken Bier und lachten. Gleb erfreute uns mit einem Purzelbaum, obwohl er selbst das „Salto“ nannte. Natürlich sagte ihm niemand, daß er sich irrte. Um 3.00 Uhr gingen alle ins Bett.

colleagues had done for our group this year,
especially the party at your house in the evening when
you prepared the tastiest meat for us.
My question to you now is: have you heard of the dates
(and probably, the months) of the next year's project
in Breisach? If you know something about it, please
let me know, because I would like to come here with
Tanya the next year.
