'AKTION SÜHNEZEICHEN' IN BREISACH

This year, from 20th july to 3th august, the 'Aktion Sühnezeichen' organizes a summer camp in Breisach. In co-operation with the 'Förderverein' and the renovation company 'Domiziel' the young people are going to support the work in the former jewish community center and tidy up the garden. A rich culture program shall introduce the participants of the camp to jewish history of the upper Rhine and the landscape of the region.

ELAINE WOLFF-WURMSER AND GARY BRON IN BREISACH

Elaine Wolff-Wurmser and Gary Bron are in Breisach again. They were already in 1998 and 2000 here and they bring a videofilm from the first year along, which among other things enables a view of the history of establishing the Förderverein. It might be for all, which were thereby, particularly for the friends and members of the Foerderverein from large interest.

GÜNTER BOLL HONOURED

On 27 January, the day of the liberation of Auschwitz KZ, in the 'Abgeorndetenhaus' in Berlin in a ceremony six Germans were distinguished with the 'German Jewish History Award', among them Günter Boll, initial member and 'scientific advisor' of our Förderverein. We congratulate to him quite cordially here to this honour.

Hans Blum

HANS BLUM IN 'AUFBAU'

In a article of 08/11/2001 of the jewish journal 'Aufbau' published in New York Hans Blum and his enthusiasm for genealogy is portraited. Hans Blum was born 1919 in Breisach, visited in october 2000 during the 'Woche der Begegnung' Breisach and is author of the book 'Juden in Breisach.

WORKSHOP WITH ELLEN MENDEL IN BREISACH

On friday, 20th July, Ellen Mendel of New York held a workshop in the former jewish community center of Breisach. She tried to look into the impact the 'Woche der Begegnung' in October 2000 has since made. She cited a 85 year old lady now living in the States who regretted not having followed the invitation to Breisach in 2000. After the workshop Bodo Kaiser showed his nearly finished film he made during those days (view Badische Zeitung, 24/07/2001)


LEON WURMSER IN BREISACH

The wellknown psychoanalyst Leon Wurmser, professor at the university of West Virginia, was in Breisach in June. Wurmser has been attending a seminar at the Catholic Academy of Freiburg and used the opportunity to visit the former jewish community center and the cemetery in Breisach, where his greatgrandmother, Sarah Wertheimer, is buried. He was very impressed by the activity of the 'Förderverein', so he said. (view Badische Zeitung, 21/06/2001)

Die Historikerin Christina Weiblen hat ihre Forschungsergebnisse zur jüdischen Geschichte Eichstettens im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert vorgestellt. Sie sind Teil des zweiten Bandes der Eichstetter Ortschronik (s. Badische Zeitung vom 6.12.2000)

Meanwhile, this week has passed and the first pictures are available here. Regional newspaper (Badische Zeitung) reports including pictures may be viewed at the respective events.

Prompted by the 60th anniversary of the deportation of the Jews of Baden to Gurs, which also brutally terminated the existence of the Jewish community in Breisach, the Breisach Former Jewish Community Center's Sponsors' Association is hosting a memorial week in cooperation with the City of Breisach. The memorial week will commence on Friday, Oct. 20, 2000 at 8:30 PM with a concert in the Former Jewish Community Center, and is to be concluded by a farewell celebration at 8:30 PM on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, which will also take place in the Former Jewish Community Center.

Revisit, remember, record - this could be the motto of these days of encouters with Breisach survivors of the holocaust and their relatives invited by the City of Breisach.

You are cordially invited by the City of Breisach am Rhein and the Sponsors' Association to attend a memorial function on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000 at 4 PM on Synagogenplatz. We are looking forward to your participation.
